Manti is the oldest town in Sanpete County
Founded in 1847, Manti Utah was named after a town mentioned in the Book of Mormon. It is one of the oldest towns in Sanpete County, Utah. Manti served as the hub of Central Utah settlements. This led to sporadic violence, until an agreement was reached in 1867. The settlers in Manti also built a fort. The first “fort” stood on a block now containing the LDS chapel. A second fort was also built, and this one is still standing.
Manti’s population increased from about three hundred in the early years to three thousand in 2010. The area served as a central hub for settlements in the Sanpete Valley. The weather was unpredictable, and the local Indians became hostile. But the community grew, and the buildings and forts they built were impressive.
